Talk description: Education technology entrepreneurs frequently boast about the great insights about learning they are able to glean, thanks to the "unprecedented amounts" of data they're collecting from their users. Every keystroke. Every click. Every pause and rewind in a video lecture. Every homework submission. Every forum post. The promise of all the data gathering and data mining: better teaching and learning through technology. And perhaps we will see education transformed. But the claims about "big data" and education echo those made by the tech industry in general, and there is incredible investor interest in this story -- in funding data science oriented startups. This presentation will examine "student data as the new oil" -- the metaphor and the money behind education data and learning analytics as seen in MOOCs and other education technologies.
Audrey Watters, a leading freelance writer in the education field and author of the blog Hack Education, will present a talk entitled (Student) Data is the New Oil: MOOCs, Metaphor, and Money. The event is free and open to members of the Columbia community with a valid University ID.

Summer Update
Greetings from the Education Collaborative! We hope that everyone is having a great summer. We are very anxious to get started on planning for the upcoming school year. Having learned more about SIPA students' interests in education from our survey last spring (see results here), we are excited to plan events related to a diverse range of education issues. We are also looking forward to working with SIPA administrators and professors to incorporate education-related issues more fully into the SIPA curriculum. It is going to be an exciting year!
Here are a few things to look forward to:
1) We will be having weekly meeting this coming semester, dates and locations TBA. In the meantime, if you have any ideas for events or other initiatives that you would like the Education Collaborative to pursue, please be in touch! Email Sarah Begeman at shb2129@columbia.edu with any and all ideas.
2) If you know of other student groups or organizations from around Columbia or elsewhere in New York who may be interested in collaborating with us for events, networking, or other initiatives, please let us know!
3) We are very excited to grow our network by welcoming in new students! We will be present at the SIPA Student Group Fair on Thursday, August 29 from 6-8:30 pm on Ancell Plaza (between the International Affairs and Law School buildings). Representatives from the Education Collaborative will be there to answer questions and welcome new students!
4) Current students- as you are thinking about what courses to take this coming semester, remember to check out our Education Course Listings, which list education-related courses from around Columbia.
Enjoy the rest of the summer, and we'll see you in the fall!

Based on the information on our Doodle, finally we will meet this Monday Dec 12th, 1pm-3pm. We are going to meet at Lehman Study Group, because we didn't have enough time for scheduling a room for the meeting.

Education Task Force Planning Meeting v2.0
Hi, SIPA Education Task Force members!
We had a great meeting today, planning the mission/ambition of the group, discussing our focus. Many things were part of the discussion: how to build a SIPA community with focus on education, including professors and students? how to collaborate with TC students and professors? what are the next steps? activities? dual degree?
Since there was a lot to be discussed, we decided to schedule a second meeting to continue the conversation. Paraphrasing what Cory said in a previous mail: these are incredibly busy days, but if you have strong feelings about the direction this group should take, we hope you'll be there!
If you are interested, please tell us when you are available, and we'll try to find a slot that works for everyone:

Education Task Force Planning Meeting
Hi All,
We will be having a group planning meeting on Thursday, December 8th at 1pm in a room soon to be announced. We have realized that getting people together and seeing what happens organically has worked really well for resource and information sharing and great conversation, but not as well for the formation of the kind of goal and action oriented group that we know is possible.
Thus, this meeting is designed to be a focused, decision making meeting with clear objectives to be accomplished in the hour that we'll have. By the end of the meeting we want to have come to conclusions about: the name of the group, the purpose of the group, the posts that will be held and who will hold them, and the activities that are really feasible for us to fully pursue 2nd semester (panels, volunteering, research, networking, etc), the people who will be responsible for those activities, the end of year goals that each activity will have, and a plan for following through on those goals as a group when we get back to campus in January. The thinking behind this is that we need to make these kinds of decisions in order to give structure and function to the group and create a group identity and atmosphere of shared responsibility. Our hope is that this will allow the group to really hit the ground running next semester ready to have some serious impact on SIPA and the surrounding community.
If you would like to help make these important decisions that will shape the group and/or are really interested in holding a post or leading an activity for at least 2nd semester, please, please come to the meeting. If you're more interested in the kind of get-your-hands-dirty education work and not really the background planning for the large group, you are still more than welcome to come, but we will not be designing specific activities or talking about logistics of activities at this meeting.
If you can't make the meeting, but still want to have some impact on what we decide and/or want to fill a post or lead an activity, please email me and we will collect and share your opinions and leadership intents at the meeting.
Finally, I know this week is busy and I'm really sorry we didn't get our act together to plan this important meeting until now. BUT, that is why it is so important that we have all opinionated, enthusiastic planners at the meeting- to give the group the kind of structure it will need to make sure this doesn't happen again!
Sorry for the long email, hope you all have a great weekend!
Cory

TODAY Tuesday 29th - Chilean student leader @SIPA
Hi all!
(you are receiving this email because you are in the SIPA Education group contact list @ http://bit.ly/sipaed)
Sorry about the late notice, but I just got this information.
Giorgio Jackson, one of the key leaders of the recent student movement in Chile, will be today Tuesday 29th at SIPA. He was President of the Federación de Estudiantes de la Universidad Católica de Chile (FEUC) in 2011 (one of the main Chilean universities) and speaker for Confederación de Estudiantes de Chile (CONFECH).
WHEN: 7pm, Tuesday, November 29th
WHERE: SIPA, Room 801
The event will be in Spanish
It will be a roundtable, and he will be talking about the student movement and protests of this year in Chile. Since I am from Chile, I can tell you that these have been probably the most important protests since we got our democracy back in 1988.
Al Jazeera interview: http://www.aljazeera.com/video/americas/2011/09/201192955515178596.html

Reminder: EDUCATION HAPPY HOUR TODAY, 6:30-8:30
Hi Everyone,
This is just a reminder to everyone who was at the first meeting of the Education Task Force that we have an EDUCATION HAPPY HOUR TODAY AT 6:30 at Haakon's Hall (on Amsterdam). Even if you can't stay very long, or you can only get there at 8:00, it would be great to see you there - we don't want to lose momentum and we're hoping to be able to figure out what people want from the group, what people think is feasible for themselves in terms of participation in the group, and what the group's next steps are going to be! Please make it out if you can - sorry I didn't send this reminder earlier!
Looking forward to seeing you soon!!
Cory

SIPA Education group - Invitation to workshop / Monday 24th, 9:50 @501B IAB
Hi education group members!
How are the midterms / projects going? I hope everything is going well!
We would like to invite you to a short workshop for planning our activities and projects for this term.
When: Monday 24th, 9:50 - 10:50
Where: 501B IAB
Last meeting we created several teams, and we would like to invite you to use this space to meet with your team and define your activities / projects. If you weren't able to attend last meeting, you can join this workshop, join a team and propose your ideas! The objective of the workshop is to define one, two or three (or more) initiatives for each team. The teams are: Networking, Learning, Communications, Future of the Group, Research, In the field.
We know these are days with a lot of things to do, but still it seems it is a good idea to meet: 1) it is important to define activities and projects for getting funding and starting some of them this term 2) it is always relaxing to discuss about education ideas/projects with cool/interesting people like us :)
The next step, after the workshop, will be a meeting with enough time and food (hopefully) for presenting the initiatives created by the teams in the workshop and for agreeing the group priorities/focuses. It will be also the opportunity for getting to know each other a little more!
Best,
P.
