Volunteer opportunity: Dominican Republic Education and Mentoring Project (DREAM)

The Dominican Republic Education and Mentoring Project (DREAM), a 501(c)3 non-profit organization providing educational programming in the North Coast of the Dominican Republic, is currently seeking qualified volunteers to assist in the development of Book Club curricula for its at-risk youth program, Young Stars (Estrellas Jovenes).

The Young Stars academic enrichment program serves youth 8-15 years old, providing specialized instruction in literacy, math, and other core skills. The program utilizes the balanced literacy model, facilitating opportunities for guided and independent reading among youth with little access to books at home or in the public school. Book Clubs are a core component of the learning experience. Students engage with high interest texts appropriate for their reading level while teachers guide them in reading comprehension strategies. The DREAM Project is looking to expand their collection of Book Club curricula to provide a wider variety of rich literacy experiences to its students.

Curriculum volunteers will be responsible for the following
  • Read one or a selection of young adult texts chosen by the organization
  • Design a Book Club curriculum for the selected texts, incorporating reading comprehension strategies for each chapter (examples will be provided). Curricula can be written in English or Spanish.
  • Meet deadlines as assigned by the organization and mutually agreed upon with the volunteer.
Qualified applicants should have experience in curriculum design and instruction, knowledge of reading comprehension strategies, and experience in early grade literacy and/or elementary education. Applicants fluent in Spanish with a strong academic vocabulary are especially encouraged to apply.

Application Process: Interested applicants should send an updated resume to Molly Hamm, Research and Planning Coordinator, at molly@dominicandream.org. Applications are due by Friday October 19th. Selected applicants will be notified via email. Final drafts of all Book Club curricula will be due no later than January 4th.
